Presents its
2nd Annual Summer Conference
August 7-11, 2002
The Inn at Biltmore Estates
Asheville, North Carolina
Asheville, North Carolina, a city in a small town’s shoes, is nestled amidst a trio of mountain ranges: the Southern Appalachians, Blue Ridge and Great Smokey Mountains.
The likes of George Vanderbilt, Henry Ford and Thomas Edison have vacationed here, lured by the expansive vistas and cool mountain air. Vanderbilt felt so content among the mountains of Asheville, that he declared it the most beautiful place on earth and set about building the largest private residence in America-Biltmore Estate.
Since then, Asheville has blossomed as a city well known for its fine arts and crafts and diversity. The Southern Highland Handicraft Guild, one of the oldest such guilds in the country, has been a catalyst for fine local handicrafts. Hop over to the Parkway to take in the offerings at the Folk Art Center. And, while you’re on the Parkway, bring your hiking boots or fly rod to take in a little nature.
Today’s downtown, an interesting architectural mélange of Art Deco, Queen Anne, Revival and Romanesque buildings, is peppered with galleries and unusual shops. The shops, cafes and tree-lined streets of the towns of Black Mountain or Biltmore Village also beckon to be explored.
Asheville is a city equally at home with its outdoor setting as it is with its refinements. Sit down on Arts and Crafts rocker on Biltmore Inn’s
porch, and you’ll know.

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM

COLLEGE OF DIPLOMATES
2002 SUMMER CONFERENCE

Jeffery Hutter
Speaker: Jeffery
Hutter, D.M.D., M.Ed. Associate Professor and Chairman, Department of Endodontics
Director of the Advanced Specialty Education Program in Endodontics
Goldman School of Dental Medicine
Boston University
Topic: An evidence-based approach to the relationship of oral disease and systemic health.
Abstract: Decisions involving patient care must be based on sound scientific principles and good clinical judgment. The first-ever surgeon general’s report on oral health
released in 2000 focused, among other issues confronting dentistry, on the relationship between oral health and good health throughout life and association between oral disease and specific health problems. While most of the evidence is compelling, there is no consensus as yet on the precise relationship between oral disease and systemic health. Endodontists and other health care practitioners must, therefore, stay informed of the relationships between oral and systemic conditions in order to address patient concerns regarding their overall health and ultimately provide them with optimal care. Using an evidence-based approach, this presentation will review the current science as it relates to oral and systemic disease. An emphasis will be placed on the relationship between endodontic disease and systemic health.

Kenneth Hargreaves
Speaker: Kenneth Hargreaves, D.D.S., Ph.D.
Professor and Chairman, Department of Endodontics
Professor, Department of Pharmacology
University of Texas, Health Science Center
San Antonio, Texas
Topic: An evidence-based approach for predicting post-operative endodontic pain.
Abstract: This presentation will summarize the available clinical studies on factors that “predict” the development of post-operative pain using an evidence-based approach. What is the best available evidence? Where are the gaps in this knowledge? What can we, as members of the College, do to address this issue?
Topic: An evidence-based approach to treating post-endodontic pain.
Abstract: An evidence-based approach for managing post-operative endodontic pain. This presentation will summarize the available clinical studies on drugs and endodontic procedures that are effective for treating post-operative pain using an evidence-based approach. |
This year's scientific program evolved as a result of a keen interest by endodontists for an
evidence-based approach to closing the gap between the best scientific evidence and current clinical practice. The College of Diplomates realized that the future course of endodontics and its strategies must include an evidence-based approach to science, education, and clinical practice.
The ADA Board of Trustees recently adopted the following working definition of “Evidence-Based Dentistry:
(EBD):
“Evidence-based dentistry is an approach to treatment planning and subsequent dental therapy that requires the judicious melding of systematic assessments of scientific evidence relating to the patient’s medical condition and history, the dentist’s clinical experience, training and judgment and the patient’s treatment needs and
preferences.”
Our speakers – Jeff Hutter and Ken Hargreaves have spent a considerable amount of time preparing for this meeting in which they will present an evidence-based approach to integrating valid scientific thinking into our extensive experiential base of endodontic knowledge.
I hope you are both stimulated and challenged by the scientific sessions and that you take the opportunity to thank our speakers for researching this difficult topic for our membership!
Enjoy the meeting!
